Mr. VanDeaven “Pete” Johnson, affectionately known as Van by his friends, was born on December 26, 1979, in Yoakum, Texas, to Willie Johnson and the late Erma Johnson. He passed away leaving behind a legacy of love, loyalty, service, and quiet sacrifice.
Deep inside, VanDeaven was humble. His wife lovingly called him her “teddy bear”—rough on the outside, but soft on the inside. He was fiercely protective of those he loved and would do whatever was necessary to make sure everyone around him felt safe, cared for, and included. If you needed something, VanDeaven made sure you had it—whether he had it himself or found a way to get it. Stubborn as a bull and always a jokester, his presence filled rooms with laughter and reassurance.
Family was everything to him. He believed deeply in taking care of his loved ones, especially the women in his family, and often carried the burdens of others without complaint. At night, he could be found checking the doors, making sure his home was secure—just one of the many quiet ways he showed his love. If VanDeaven loved you, you never had to question it—you knew it.
VanDeaven and his wife, Johnise, shared a beautiful love story. They began dating at just 19 years old and were together for 26 years, married for 22 years. They were opposites in the best way—he saw what she didn’t see, had opinions she hadn’t considered, and balanced her in ways only he could. Their love will continue on through their beloved son, Jaylen Johnson.
A man of deep compassion, VanDeaven had a special love for veterans and an even greater heart for the homeless. He would give away the last of his money and believed it was not his place to judge what others did with it—only to help. He gave selflessly, often quietly, never seeking praise. If someone needed help, he would even take out a loan to ensure they had what they needed.
VanDeaven proudly served 20 years in the United States Navy, a testament to his dedication, discipline, and commitment to service.
He will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Johnise Johnson; his children, Cassandra Rosser, Tra’on Turner, and Jaylen Johnson; his father, Henry “Willie” Johnson; his siblings, Christopher Johnson, Kevin Johnson, Richard Stevens, and Shelly Stevens; and his aunt, Rita Franklin a special cousin-sister “Nitha”
An host of grandchildren, cousins, nieces and extended family of masonic brothers, military brother and sisters in arms.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Erma Johnson.
VanDeaven would want his family and friends to celebrate his life, remembering the laughter, the love, the sacrifices, and the many ways he showed up for others. His legacy lives on in every life he touched.
