Emma "Madonna" Johnson

Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to Classie and Sherman Johnson. She was the seventh of fourteen children born into their loving family.

Madonna was a joyful, free-spirited woman who loved people and truly lived life to the fullest. Known as the life of the party, she loved to dance—and the easiest way to get her onto the dance floor was to play rock and roll, especially a song by her favorite artist, Madonna.

Family was at the center of her life. Madonna loved her sons, Blake Johnson, James Thomas, and Jeremy Johnson, and she deeply cherished her grandchildren, especially her granddaughters, Kayla and Mariah. Her beloved dog, Weezy, was her constant and faithful companion.

Madonna had a special way of making everyone feel loved and welcomed. She never held grudges or had “beef” with anyone. She gave nearly everyone a nickname, and if she was not calling you by the special name she chose for you, she lovingly called you “homegirl.” To know Madonna was truly to love her. Her heart and her home were always open, and she would readily welcome strangers and offer shelter and support to anyone in need.

In her spare time, Madonna enjoyed visiting local casinos with her sisters, whom she affectionately called “Top” and “Catfish.” Whether she was dancing, laughing, spending time with family, or simply enjoying the company of others, Madonna brought energy and happiness wherever she went.

Madonna passed away unexpectedly while enjoying her first trip outside the country. She was excited to fly on an airplane for the first time and even more delighted when she discovered the resort offered all-you-could-eat room service. On the day of her passing, she spent time with five of her sisters and a group of friends riding ATVs in Tulum, Mexico. She had an amazing time, surrounded by laughter, adventure, and people she loved.

Although her departure was sudden, Madonna’s final days reflected the way she lived—joyfully, boldly, and surrounded by family and friends. Her laughter, generosity, unforgettable personality, and love for others will remain forever in the hearts of all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Toni Joan Johnson. 

She leaves to cherish her memory her 3 sons, 12 siblings, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and a community who loved her dearly. 

The family will gather privately to honor Madonna’s life. A public celebration of life will be held at a later date so that her friends and community may come together to remember and celebrate the beautiful life she lived.
