Betty Jean Marshall, 84 years of age, passed on Thursday, July 2, 2020, in Gulfport, Mississippi. Betty is the only daughter born to the late Mattie Lou Chester and Mr. Gaston Rupert on April 22, 1936, in Gulfport, MS. Sis. Betty Marshall was married to the late Lonnie Marshall in 1966. They rededicated their vows in 1994 at the Main Street Baptist Church, Biloxi, MS. Sis. Marshall was a member of the St. John Missionary Baptist Church of Gulfport, Mississippi under the leadership of the late Rev. Ozell Moses and in 1968 she became a long time member of the Main Street Missionary Baptist Church of Biloxi, MS under the leadership of the late Dr. Kenneth M. Haynes. She served faithfully as a choir member, senior women mission auxiliary, and a deaconess. Her favorite song was the “Finishing Line” and “We’ve come this far by Faith”. Later in life, she joined the New Jerusalem Baptist Church where she served as an active member of the Motherboard, Senior Mission, and the Women’s Fellowship Ministry. Sis. Marshall was employed at Memorial Hospital, Hancock Bank, and Sears Roebuck. She was a devoted wife, mother, and friend. She was a real advocate in being hospitable and lending a helping hand to everyone she interacted with. She was a loving grandmother and took special joy in her grandchildren and loved them dearly. She treasured working in the church and cherished praising the Lord while serving on several committees and always enjoyed helping others and spending time with family. She had a love for fashion and her classy elegance reflected in her style. She loved to cook and serve family meals from scratch, especially her famous caramel cake. Seafood was her favorite food. She was a strong member of the Isaiah Frederick Companion Senior’s Program. She received the NAACP Mother of the Year Award on May 8, 1977. She was also one of the best “environmental engineers” in cleaning her house. She was a devoted Christian and will be greatly missed by all who loved her. Sis. Marshall leaves to cherish her loving memory, three daughters: Mrs. Jacquelyn (Richmond) Joiner of Jackson, MS; Ms. Janice Johnson, Miss Veronica (Delarrius Deere) Mayers both of Biloxi, MS; three sons, Mr. Alfred D. (Carolyn) Lewis and Mr. Willie Lewis all of Gulfport, MS; Mr. Wayne (Gwen) Fairman of Moss Point, MS; twelve grandchildren: Mr. Jay Hopkins, Mrs. Jamie (Roderick) Peoples; Ms. YaKieba LeBlanc, Dr. Cameron Lewis, Mr. Orlando (Sheree) Lewis, Miss Natasha Lewis, Mr. Katrell Lewis, Mr. Malik Blackston, Miss Jasmine Anderson, Mr. Da’Karia, Miss Ta’Nayia, Mrs. Wanda (Reggie) Conner and eighteen great-grandchildren and many wonderful friends.
