Betty Lou Nelson Campbell was born October 3, 1935, to the union of J.C. and Sadie Nelson in DeFuniak Springs, FL. On June 16, 2025, with some of her granddaughters and her pastor by her side, God granted her ultimate healing. Betty was affectionately known as Ms. Betty, Mommy, Mudda, Mudder, Grandma and Gran-Gran to her family and friends. She was reared in the Walton County School System and graduated from Tivoli High School. While in high school she was a cheerleader and played basketball as well as participating in other school events. Betty married James Louis Campbell Sr. and to this union 6 children were born. As a military wife the family traveled and lived overseas for 9 years before moving back to the states and making the Mississippi Gulf Coast their home.
Betty attended William Carey University where she obtained her associate degree in Early Childhood Education. She taught HeadStart in Turnkey - Gulfport, MS and East Biloxi HeadStart. She retired in 2000 after 25 years of dedicated service.
Betty joined St. Paul A.M.E Church and was a faithful member for 18 years. She joined New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Kenneth Hollins where she was a member of the choir, Pastor's aide committee, Senior Mission, and the Good Samaritans Auxiliary. She loved her Pastor and her church family immensely.
Betty joined the Anna Washington Temple 932 of the MS State Association in 1975 where she served in many capacities including Daughter Ruler. While a member of Anna Washington Temple she was instrumental in organizing The Harvey Ross Company of the Antler Guard Department. She became a member of Gulf Coast Temple #471 of Biloxi, MS where she served faithfully. She was a member of the Amelia Boudreaux Council, a Daughter of MS State Association where she served as a State Organizer, sang in the choir and on the communion committee. She was past Liaison Officer for the Southern Division of the Antler Guard Department with the rank of Brig. General. Her motto she lived by; Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Betty was a God-fearing woman and a prayer warrior. She would often sing One Day at a time Sweet Jesus! She would tell you to pray, go to church, seek the God and He will work everything out for you.
