Coevie Avery

Sister Coevie McGowan Avery was born on February 13, 1930 in Tylertown, MS to the late James & Ethel Mae McGowan. She was preceded in death by one brother, Odell Andrews. Her mother, father, step-father: O.J. Andrews, grandmother & grandfather: Sophie & Bob James also preceded her in death. Sister Avery had a very quite, peaceful and sweet demeanor. Sister Avery attended school in Walthall County. She was a member of St. James United Methodist Church of Tylertown. After moving to Biloxi, MS, she became a faithful and dedicated member of the Main Street Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. Kenneth Haynes, Sr. She served as president of the Senior Mission and Advisor of the Youth Choir. Sister Avery was a faithful Christian Woman of God who remained faithful until her health began to fail. Sister Avery was united in holy matrimony to the late Mr. Charley Avery. Sister Avery was a member of the N.A.A.C.P. In 1993, Sister Avery had a Vision for the women of her church. She saw all women wearing RED attire being covered by the BLOOD of Jesus. In March of each year, the ladies of Main Street Missionary Baptist Church still support that vision with a program called Women In Red. On Thursday, February 6, 2014, Mrs. Coevie Avery departed this life at the Ocean Springs Nursing Center. Her loving memories will forever linger in the hearts of her five Sisters: Ethel A. Wise of Ocean Springs, MS, Flora (Pri) Roberson of Jackson, MS, Linda (Richard)Sanders of Cedar Rapids, IA, Willie Mae Martin of Gulfport, MS & Deminice (Jerry) Smith of Monticello, MS; two Brothers: Willie (Mary) Andrews of Chicago, IL & McArthur (Nola) Andrews of Tylertown, MS; two Stepsons: Richard Avery and Joey Avery of CA; and two grandchildren. Mrs. Avery also leaves to cherish her memory, her Caretaker, Alma Alexander; a special brother & sister: Silas K. (Gwen) Richmond of Clinton, MS and Junglian Busha Larkhart (Tim) of Stone Mountain, GA; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; and a very Special Friend & Roommate, Mrs. Mary Dury who resides in the Ocean Springs Nursing Center. Services will begin at 9:30 am on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at Main Street Missionary Baptist Church with visitation one hour before. The family of Mrs. Coevie McGowan Avery has entrusted her care to the professional staff of RICHMOND-AUGUST FUNERAL HOME.
