Deacon Beverett Thompson, Sr., a faithful servant of God, passed from labor to reward Thursday, October 26, 2017. Born March 6, 1934 in Wesson, MS, to Lena Thompson and Bilbo Willis, Mr. Beverett Thompson would leave a legacy of strength, commitment and integrity to the generations who would follow in his footsteps. He moved to Wiggins, MS, where he attended and graduated high school. He joined the Navy during the Korean War and served on the USS Des, Moines. Mr. Thompson returned to Wiggins where he met and married Dorothy Hendley. The family moved to Gulfport where they raised 7 children. Those honored to be fathered by Deacon Thompson are, Beverly (Wilbert) Williams, Francesca (Charles) Flagler, Beverett (Kim) Thompson Jr., James (Kimberly) Thompson, Donald (Venette) Thompson, Patrick (deseased) (Tisha), Mitchell (Lori) Thompson. Mr. Thompson spent his working career as a firefighter at the Naval Construction Battalion Center (NCBC) at Gulfport. He became eligible and petitioned to become the first Black fireman to work at the Navy Base. His performance was exemplarily as a fireman as he received many awards and accolades. His work ethic was displayed prominently in an award as a CPR trainer for firefighters along the Gulf Coast and for accumulating over 2000 hours of sick leave. At Naval Construction Battalion Center, Mr. Thompson previously worked as a postman and clerk. He frequently held two jobs, working as a longshoreman and bus driver for Coastal Transportation. Mr. Thompson was a devoted Deacon as a member of both, McDowell Memorial COGIC in Gulfport and New Zion Baptist Church in Wiggins. He was an active member of the New Zion Men’s and McDowell Memorial Church Choir. He enjoyed singing in church with his children, stating often, “I have my own backup singers” and “I take my children to church; I don’t send them to church.” Mr. Thompson was also an active volunteer throughout his life, specifically with Meals on Wheels. He enjoyed helping and interacting with people and it is stated that he never met strangers and always had a smile and encouragement for everyone. His favorite quote was, “You can trip and fall but you must get up.” Throughout his personal and professional life, he practiced this motto bravely, before his family, friends and community. He was blessed with numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren and a first cousin, Reginia Williams. He was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Dorothy; son, Patrick; and brothers, James, Arthur, and Bobby Ray. Later in life, Mr. Thompson moved back to Wiggins and remarried. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Monroe Thompson; step-children, Victor Monroe, Lynn (Willie) Coleman, Clarence (Alice) Monroe, Louise (J D) Walker, Darryl (Mary) Monroe, Paul Monroe, and Nina (Shannon) Hinton; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and numerous people who love and cared for him.
